Karen was one of the Living Water sopranos during my first year with the group. She’s quite a musician, as she also plays piano and violin (and wouldn’t mind getting to play cello someday too, I think). I remember her for her cheerfulness and her determination to serve the Lord.

For some reason, I remember Karen as someone who had good and wonderful dreams. This isn’t to say that I knew what those dreams might have been – it’s just an impression I’ve carried about Karen “ever since whenever.” And so that was the inspiration for “Star Chaser”. And when I think of this song, I almost magically see Karen’s sparkling eyes and blonde hair – with the kind of smile that belies the existence of those dreams.

There’s a bit of harmonic symbolism in the song too. The verses refer to the all-too-common fact that we chase after things – Power, Prestige, Fame, Wealth – which don’t make any difference in eternity. At these points in the score, there are some dissonant chords which hint at these things not being able to provide the peace and fulfillment which only comes through faith in Jesus Christ.

So … there’s a Star to chase – it’s Jesus Christ! And I see Karen following Him and keeping those sparkling eyes on Him because His promises will surely come to pass.

Some seek out the famous and rich,
Some hope to know powerful men,
They strive to satisfy their souls with fame.
But there’s no fulfillment in things
which die and are not seen again,
So I will follow the Star that is called by God’s own Name.

I’m chasing the Star of the Morning,
The Son of God is He,
The King of Kings, the Lord of Lords,
The One who died and lives for me,
And though He waits in the distance
Across the seas and the land,
He also walks beside me
And holds me safe in His hand.

Some strive after personal gain,
Some sample the pleasures of earth,
They think that life’s no more than just a game.
But there’s no fulfillment in things
which die and are not seen again,
So I will follow the Star that is called by God’s own Name.

So come with me,
Chase the Morning Star above,
Forsake passing things,
And give Him all your love.
