Strength, whether we think we have it or whether we think we need it, is from God. He is the source of all power, and therefore is the One to whom we should turn when we need help. The message in this song is supported by the accompaniment, which starts rather gently but grows through the duration of the piece. There are two clues. The first is in the word “strength,” which is the meaning of “Charles.” The second is in the first and last key signatures (C major and A major), which are Charles’ initials. Note: this song was completed just before the Ankneys relocated to the Dayton, Ohio area, so it’s another LWCP song which was finished just under the wire.

There is an interesting technical question: how do you play the cluster chords (F#-G-A-B-D-F#) on the last page? Answer: you must use the heel of your thumb!

When we lack the power to move,
When the challenge exceeds our heart and will,
God is ready to prove
that He can make us conquerors.

Strength is from the Lord,
Without Him there’s nothing; there is no way to live,
Strength is from the Lord,
Through weakness is glorified our Jesus who lived and died,
And rose from the grave that strength might me ours to have.

When our breath grows short and weak,
When the path ahead is steep and hard,
God provides us all we seek
and makes us able to run the course.

Give Him your need and weakness,
Give Him concern and care,
He will take your burden,
He will give hope in the midst of despair!
