Psalm 19 tells us that creation practically screams the praises of God. If rocks could sing, they would. If trees could jump up and down, they would. If clouds could do their own skywriting, they would. All of this is to say that we humans are pretty poor at observing and following nature’s example because we can sing, and jump, and write – and we don’t do it for God’s glory nearly as much as we ought.

There are three clues in this song. The least obvious clue, which perhaps is not quite a legitimate one, is that “A Cappella” in the header of the first page is capitalized. The second is that the key signatures are A major and C major; both of these clues are an embedment of Amy’s initials in the score. The third clue is found in the first words of the first and third verses: Sunny and Starry are Amy’s parents (yes, this was just too good to pass up).

This is an a cappella number with effects in the voices. The bell chords in the first verse generate a harmonic background very nicely. I recommend a block-sectional configuration of alto-tenor-bass-soprano (left-to-right or vice versa) because it will build a stereo effect in the second verse – the accompaniment will appear to bounce from side to side.

Historical sidelight: Amy Somes and Cayley Hunt did this song as a vocal duet-plus-cello for a talent show at Valley Church and won first place for their rendition!

Sunny days, warm and bright,
Give to me cheerful light,
Praising the Lord God of heaven,
Babbling brook, singing bird,
Use their voice, yet no word,
To speak of the love He has given.

Stormy days, cool and grey,
Show me how raindrops play,
Praising the Lord God above,
Lightning bolt, thunder cloud,
Voice of storm, strong and loud,
Declare His outpouring of love.

The Lord has made creation,
The seas and all the lands,
The deepest reaches of space,
He holds them in His hands!

Starry nights, cold and deep,
Whisper peace while I sleep,
Praising the Lord God of all things,
Silver moon, galaxies,
Comet streaks, gentle breeze,
Move me to love Him, my King.
