Amy was our accompanist for a few months during the 1989-1990 season. I knew she had to be a special friend – we share the same birthdate! Her time with us coincided with the release of the first LWCP songs. She enjoyed the new music tremendously, and came to rehearsal saying the the previous song had been running through her mind all week long. For me it was the first indication that there was a mystique about the songs which God was giving me to write.

That remembrance was the basis of this song – we need Jesus Christ to be in our minds all the time, so this is a prayer that He might make that happen,

My mind is slow to apprehend
the love of God, and so my heart
commits to deeds it can’t defend
and sails seas it should not chart.
So I lean on You, O Lord, and reach up to take Your hand.

Be the thought that won’t fade away from my forgetful mind,
Be my Light undiminishing when my eyes are dead and blind,
Be my Rescuer in every way, for I lean on You alone,
Be the One who has been my King when I stand before Your throne.

My mind is reluctant to follow,
It wins, by its corrupt control
vict’ry ephem’ral and hollow,
and spir’tual peril for my soul.
So I lean on You, O Lord, and reach up to take Your hand.

But You, O Lord, give safety beyond all danger,
And You free me from all my doubts and fears.
