God has a plan for each of our lives, and so has appointed a place for us to serve Him to work out that plan. Unfortunately, many of us forget this aspect of the Lord’s work in us, and so occasionally, and perhaps more than occasionally, feel mislocated or unwanted or unloved. We ought to know better than to let ourselves feel this way!

This song is a reminder of the Lord’s continuing interest in us, and the constant provision He makes for us to serve Him and grow in Him. The incorporation of a line for children’s choir is designed to underscore the point because we, for some silly reason, think that the very young are not in a position to serve God as thoroughly and effectively as their elders.

Perhaps the obvious idea of referring to the servant girl in Acts 12:13 didn’t appeal to me; at any rate, it’s not here. For months, Living Water knew that the clue was in the lyric phrases “thirteenth of a baker’s dozen” and “smallest among the masses,” and that the baker’s dozen was a literal, well-known thirteen-of-something-or-other. Unfortunately, no one solved it before we first performed it, and so I was required to release the solution at that time. The answer is that the baker’s dozen is the thirteen Colonies; a quick historical check will reveal that the thirteenth state to join the Union, and the smallest colony are one and the same: Rhode Island.

Funny thing: when we first performed this song, the members of the children’s choir asked/ pleaded/demanded to sing the melody with us (so we swapped their part with the first sopranos). They made the point about being useful to God right back to us!

If you think that you don’t matter,
If you feel your life has nothing great to show,
If it seems like you’re the smallest one among the masses,
If it looks as if you’ve nowhere left to go…
\”

God has a place for you,
He doesn’t forget, He’ll hold you in His hand,
God has a place for you,
For every day,
In His special way,
God has a place for you in His perfect plan.

If you think you have no purpose,
If you feel that life has come and passed you by,
If seems liks your the thirteenth of a baker’s dozen,
If is looks as if your living is a lie…

He welcomes strangers, He welcomes the lost,
He draws them close to His side,
He holds His children close in His arms,
As in His love they abide.
