When I’ve written songs with style transitions, they normally have started in a traditionally style and have switched to a contemporary one. “Sojourner’s Hope” is an exception in that the switch is from traditional choral to Baroque fugue. The message is one of encouragement, and is an assurance that we need not give up in the face of discouragement because God will reward our faithfulness. “Be not discouraged, but trust in the Lord… Nothing can part us from our Lord… And we shall live with God forever… All praise to Jesus Christ, the Lord of Lords… Amen.”

The clue is a simple one; Scott’s then-initials are the same as the title acronym.

Be not discouraged, but trust in the Lord,
Be not frightened, but cling to His Word,
For Jesus Christ will take His own to live with Him forevermore.
Nothing can part us from our Lord,
Nothing can part us from our Lord,
Not land, not water, no walls, no bars,
Not men, not powers, nor angels, nor demons!
And we shall live with God forever, Amen, forevermore, Amen!
