(Just a note: This MP3 is a men’s chorus voicing of the original SAB score – because those were the voices I could record…)

Colleen was with Living Water during my second year with the group. It was exciting to see her singing with us; she’d been through a lot of ups and downs in what was, at that time, the not-so-distant past , and so I’d like to think that the songs we sang were used by the Lord to anchor her hope in Jesus Christ (it turned out that the first volumes of the Living Water Composition Project were indeed used by God to touch her heart!)

Colleen’s had her share of struggles, sometimes winning – and sometimes losing – battles where she’s found herself. And yet through it all I see God’s hand protecting her, caring for her, loving her – no matter where Colleen (or any of us, for that fact) goes, the Lord shows her His “unfailing love” as He seeks to draw and to keep her close to His side. He will be watching over her wherever she is, and will be waiting for her wherever she goes. It truly is infinitely precious to know that God cares for His children!

That’s the main clue. There also is a second one in the music, or so I think: The music itself seems to be a reflection of Colleen’s personality. Most of this for me is in the general style, but there also are the appoggiaturas (grace notes) in the piano part in the last chorus – Colleen strikes me as the kind of person who has an eye for the pretty things (and, like them, is pretty herself), and these embellishments reflect that.

*Bob and Laura, this song is in many ways just as much for both of you as it is for Colleen… she’s your daughter, and she’s my friend, and as God provides we all shall continue to be “on call” for each other. My love to you all!

There are times I run away from God my Father,
There are moments when I do not care,
But no matter how hard I try to escape the Lord on high,
No matter where I go, He’s already there.

His unfailing love surrounds me, accepts me, and heals me,
His unfailing love astounds me, protects me, and shields me,
He’s the Lord who gives me hope and the One who brings me peace,
He has the answers to my cares,
His unfailing love upholds me, preserves me, and feeds me,
His unfailing love enfolds me, assures me, and leads me,
He’s the Lord who guarantees that all pain will one day cease,
Wherever I am – He’s right there.

There are moments when it seems that God has left me,
There are times when He seems far away,
But though my faith is small, He’s still my all in all,
And sends His perfect light through clouds of gray.

I cannot hide from His Spirit,
I can’t escape from His love,
God is beneath and around me,
But most of all He reigns in heaven above.
