The key, of course, is a pun between the title and Jessica’s maiden name. This actually turned out to be prophetic after a fashion since I was encouraging Living Water to invite the junior highers to join us permanently (we were senior high-only until 1990, but had asked the junior highers to join us during the summer the previous couple of years). The requirement for that acceptance, however, was set at the level of a unanimous decision, so it didn’t happen for a year or so after I proposed the idea.

Jessica, meanwhile, had sung with us during the summer of 1990 and just kept coming to rehearsals during the fall. Her willingness to stay with us on a semi-official basis (I conveniently looked the other way when it came to the issue of her year in school) help to convince the last few dissenting members that having seventh and eight graders join us was a good idea.

Once I tried to make my life my own,
I sought to be the master of my salvation.
When my efforts failed me, then I was left alone,
With nothing left to do but cry to You in desperation.

You’re the Writer of my destiny,
You design my where and when,
You’re the God whose grace has set me free,
Now my life flows from Your pen.

You tell me that I’m in Your care,
Your hand upon my life is proof of Your love,
And when circumstances are more than I can bear,
I lift my hands to You, the Lord of Lords above.

So take me, Lord,
And shape me as an author writes a phrase,
And I’ll rejoice in what You’ve written
in the story of my life,
and give You all the praise.
