On what are you relying for your everlasting salvation? The Bible, especially the New Testament, brings this to the fore because it’s the highest-priority issue which confronts men, women, and children. Irrespective of the question “From where did I come?” is the greater question “Where am I going?” After all, history isn’t quite as large a question mark since, in some sense, you’ve already been there – it’s already been squared away in someone’s textbook. But the big unknown is what lies ahead (and although surveys show that the greatest fear people have is public speaking, with death behind it, I think this is because we’re conditioned to think that the issue of our own mortality will never come up… until it’s too late).

Anyway, you can rely on probability, your own works, your parents’ spiritual heritage, or tradition. You can try imagining heaven in your very own special way (with the attendant suppositions about how you’re going to attain to it). But the Bible tells us that nothing we can do will ever make us fit for heaven; the reason for this is that we’re all sinners (come on, admit it! you almost certainly have used the expression “nobody’s perfect” now and then – so you believe it too…). According to God’s Word, the only way to heaven (eternal life, paradise, …) is through the Lord Jesus Christ, who lived a perfect, sinless life; was crucified for our sins; was buried; and rose from the grave.

This song is written for Mike Abels… The clue is in the word “continental” – Mike toured with the Continentals for a couple of years. Somehow, everyone picked up on this one pretty quickly…

You must trust the Lord for everything,
You must cast yourself upon His everlasting love,
You must trust the Lord for everything,
And He will save your soul from above.

Do not trust your expectations, don’t give yourself to fate,
Do not think your machinations alter your soul’s estate,
Do not feel that peace is yours unless you are God’s own child,
There ain’t no way heaven’s based on your own style!

Do not hope your parents’ creed becomes your inheritance,
Do not let tradition say you only need penitence,
Do not claim that continental breeding makes heaven yours,
True life only comes through Jesus Christ – He is the Lord!

Other arrangements available for handbell choir.
