Christians all look forward to going to heaven. Sometimes, though, some of us conveniently ignore the agency of death or Rapture which must necessarily precede such an event. Perhaps this is an indicator of how tied to this world we’ve become. In any event, in Christ that future is secure, and it therefore is our responsibility to live our lives for God’s glory simply because that’s the only way we can send anything ahead (i.e. “you can’t take it with you”).

This song is dedicated to Michelle because of her struggle to be reunited with her family after a couple of difficult years when she had to be apart from them. In the end, the Lord brought about a reunion, and she returned home.

In passing, there also is a second clue in the words: the word “sojourner” appears in the lyrics, and, if you like, is reminiscent of LWCP 49, “Sojourner’s Hope,” which was written for her brother Scott.

I’m called to be a sojourner
Through the grace of Christ, my Savior,
For a short while, this world’s my dwelling place.
I have great anticipation
Of a heavenly destination
Where I’ll see my Jesus face to face.
I will hope in my God, I will trust in Him,
For one day I’ll be…

Home! Home at last!
Forever with my Savior,
Forever with my Lord,
Home! Home at last!
When life on earth is over, I’ll be home at last.

While I’m living on this earth
In the promise of the second birth
I’ll enjoy fellowship warm and bright,
Then one day we’ll soar through the skies
To join the saints in paradise
And the heavenly family will reunite.
I will hope in my God, I will trust in Him,
For one day I’ll be…

Home at last! Life on earth is done and I’m home at last.
