Trusting in Jesus

Sometimes I have the feeling that I was born fifty years too late. For some reason, God’s given me a strange (for my generation) aptitude for writing Big Band music. Trusting In Jesus is remarkable in this respect; it seems to sound just as if it came directly from that musical era. There even is a segment which I can hear the Andrews Sisters singing!

When we first performed this song at Valley Church in 1989, we were able to assemble a pretty decent ensemble, and it went well. Les Nederveld, our baritone, said at rehearsal the next Wednesday that he’d been in line at McDonald’s after the service and heard someone whistling the tune behind him…

Things were even better at the Mount Hermon Dimensions In Church Music Conference the next summer, where we were privileged to present a miniconcert. For this, we borrowed the conference orchestra (aka pickup ensemble) and found that the Lord had sent exactly the correct instrumentation for the score, including the huge and capable hands of Johnnie Carl (he can span thirteen piano keys with each hand…). Fred Bock was one of the clinicians that week, and I understand that he turned to Drinda Frenzel and said, “I’ll give you two bucks if you’ll jitterbug.” For some reason, I heard about Glenn Miller for the rest of the week…

I’m trusting in Jesus, I’m trusting in Jesus my Lord,
and I don’t have to worry ’cause the future’s secure,
I’m walking with Jesus, I’m walking with Jesus my Lord,
and I don’t have to wander ’cause my path is clear.

Give Him the glory, for He is the King
and eternally He is the Lord of all things,
Give Him the honor, the praise, adoration,
for He is the only true way of salvation,
Trust Him as Savior and trust Him as Lord
and be learning His Word because it is your sword,
Trust Him as Master and give Him your all –
Will you show you love Him and obey His call?

I’m living for Jesus, I’m living for Jesus my Lord,
and I can’t serve myself because the Lord is near.

I’ll glorify Jesus, I’ll glorify Jesus my Lord,
and I’m looking for His coming ’cause it’s almost here!
