Close to You (Handbells, 3 to 7 octaves, plus handchimes, 3 octaves, Level 4)

Hal David and Burt Bacharach teamed up to write (They Long to Be) Close to You, a gentle, plaintive song about romances that ended up being daydreams. Although hundreds of artists have recorded this song, most of us remember it as the Carpenters’ big hit of 1970. Our arrangement is scored for three to seven octaves of handbells with three octaves of handchimes. The score also includes an optional ending repeat for those times when you want to inspire some audience participation.

Why do birds suddenly appear
Every time you are near?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you.

Why do stars fall down from the sky
Every time you walk by?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you.

On the day that you were born, the angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true,
So they sprinkled moondust in your hair of gold
And starlight in your eyes of blue

That is why all the girls in town (girls in town)
Follow you (follow you) all around (all around)
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you.
