Het roosje

This pretty Dutch folk song’s title Het roosje translates “the rose”.

‘t Knaapje zag een roosje staan
‘t Roosje op de heide.
‘t Had zo’n kleurig kleedje aan,
Snel is hij er heen gegaan.
‘t Was of het hem beidde.
Roosje, roosje, roosje rood,
Roosje op de heide.

‘t Knaapje zei: Ik pluk u af,
Roosje op de heide.
‘t Roosje zei: Ik weer u af,
En ik prik u voor uw straf
Wilt gij dat ik lijde?
Roosje, roosje, roosje rood,
Roosje op de heide.

En het wilde knaapje brak
‘t Roosje op de heide.
‘t Roosje weerde zich en stak;
Maar de knaap rukt van de tak
‘t Roosje op de heide
Roosje, roosje, roosje rood,
Roosje op de heide.

The boy saw a rose
Rose on the heath.
“It was such a colorful dress,
He went quickly.
It was as if it both served him.
Rose, rose, rose red,
Rose on the heath.

The boy said: I will pluck you,
Rose on the heath.
Rose said: I repel you,
And I prick you for your punishment
Do you want me to suffer?
Rose, rose, rose red,
Rose on the heath.

And the wild boy broke
Rose on the heath.
Rose resisted and stabbed;
But the boy is ripping off the branch
Rose on the heath
Rose, rose, rose red,
Rose on the heath.
