Music - Amazing Grace
Sometimes people ask about whether I can write an arrangement for them. Sometimes I'm even able to comply!
I turned out that Ted Urbach (out there somewhere...) asked about whether I was planning to build some more arrangements of old standards. I changed my daily schedule a bit so that I'd have time reserved for composing, and here we are!
This arrangement of "Amazing Grace" alternates between the traditional melody and a somewhat bluesy modification thereof. The first verse is in 9/8 time; I guess I was thinking of a Gospel swing feel. Then the tempo changes after that (faster, in 4/4), and the alternate melody kicks in. The third verse reverts to the original melody, except with some dissonance added to go along with "Through many danger, toils, and snares...", and then the new melody returns for the fourth verse.
Enjoy!
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved,
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!Through many dangers, toils, and snares
I have already come,
'Tis grace hath led me safe thus far
And grace will lead me home. When we've been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we'd first begun.
