Dedicated to Beth Colby
Released: 1/24/1993
I return to the theme of Romans 12:1-2 frequently, mostly, I
suppose, because of the importance of the issue of personal
dedication. It also is highly probable that my spiritual lack during
the first fifteen years of my life is the driving force in this
issue: I don't want any of my singers to waste that much time not
serving the Lord! And so, in personal terms, this song reiterates the
decision I made on November 20, 1976, when I, having been a Christian
for about three years, dedicated everything I am and have to the
Lord.
The "words" clue in this song is found in the first four words of
the chorus: "But Every Talent's His" - I
was surprised that no one caught the partial answer in the title! The
"music" clue is more interesting: The tenor line in the chorus is
identical, within transposition, to the internal piano countermelody
in the chorus of "God
Looks On The Stature Of Your Heart" (LWCP 19); Beth and Cayley
were very good friends through their high school years.
Why am I here? What's my purpose in life?
What's to be the mark I make?
How shall I live to honor the Lord
if I choose for Jesus' sake?"
Those who love this world tell me to be
Everything that I can be, they say I should live for me.
But...Chorus: ... every talent's His, I'll serve the Lord above,
The eternal King who gives me all His love,
And my offering to Him is the life that I lead,
For I owe my everything to the One who set me free. What is the gift I must lay at His feet?
Should I give Him all my dreams?
Give Him my hopes, all my plans and my goals
in uncertainty, it seems?
Those who claim there's no God who has rescued my soul,
Say that I should set my course - they tell me to keep control.
But...Chorus He has given me life, and I walk in His way,
So I choose to give Him all my being and I say that...Chorus
