The thematic material for this song was taken from "Debbie," which means "bee;" this constitutes a verbal clue. In addition to writing meaningful lyrics, I tried to maintain scientific accuracy in the words: Bees don't fly at night, presumably because they depend on their ability to perceive ultraviolet light (which wouldn't be available in sufficient amounts at night) to see what they're doing.The parallel between flowers/sunshine and blessings/God really makes a lot of sense when we look at our own lives. In a sense, then, this song is a sort of parable.
There also is a clue in the music. Ignoring the flats in the key signature, the uppermost notes in the first four measures of the accompaniment spell D-E-B-B-E-E- - D-E-B-B-E-E-F. Musically, it was interesting to observe how the resulting melodic line led to quartal (fourth-based) harmonies.
