Growth

Part of our job as ringers or directors is to pass on knowledge at a level of completeness and fidelity that those who receive it from us can pass it on to those whom they will teach. You and I learned what we know from someone who learned it from someone... we're all links in a chain.

Just briefly, here are some ideas which I've found useful for a long time: With respect to this notebook, they apply to bass ringers, but in life, you'll find they apply to anything and everything.

Teach them the fundamentals

• Make sure they know the techniques, and that they know them well.
• Make them cognizant of the different timing and skills involved (hmmm... take them out for one taco?)

Teach them to share

• Give them practice in playing as a team
• Encourage them to take the initiative in making the teamwork happen.

Teach them to teach

• Have your more experienced members educate the newer members.
• Arrange opportunities for them to share their understanding with others outside your group.

Cut 'em loose

• Get them to the point where they can take charge.
• Allow them to disagree (agreeably) with your preferences; they may find a better solution (but keep a balance between experimentation and time-to-performance!).
